What to Expect

The initial consultation will last up to 45 minutes and will follow a three step process, subsequent consultations will last up to 30 minutes. More information below.....

1. Case History

Before any treatment is done a case history will be taken. Detailed questions will be asked about the reason you have come for treatment, e.g. how long you have had the problem for, what makes it worse, and how this affects your life.

A medical history will be taken to ensure you are safe to treat as well as any clinical testing and examinations that are needed.

"All these details will give clues to help establish a diagnosis."

2. Assessment

A full postural assessment will be done, with the patient standing and sitting as well as a full examination of the affected joints and muscles.

You will be asked to undress to your underwear so please wear something you will be comfortable in.

However, if you are not comfortable with this it is possible to work while a patient is fully clothed.
You will then be given a diagnosis which will be carefully explained to you.

"An individually tailored treatment plan
along with rehabilitation advice will be drawn up. Postural advice and exercises will also be given to allow you to help manage your own recovery."

3.Your Treatment

Osteopathic treatment involves gentle stretching, soft tissue techniques (massage), gentle articulation of the joints and mobilisation techniques.

At the end of the treatment, self management advice will be given in the form of strengthening exercises and stretches. Postural advice may also be given, as well as nutritional information if appropriate.

"Advice on self management will be given to help facilitate the healing process."

Number of sessions

The number of sessions will depend on the patient's problem but the majority of patients are effectively treated within 3-4 sessions.

Expectant Mothers

Pregnancy causes postural changes as well as hormonal changes, which affect the function of the body. Osteopathy can help you to adapt more smoothly to these rapid changes. Common conditions seen and treated by Osteopaths are low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, leg and hip pain, thorax pain, heartburn and indigestion. Osteopathy can help to relieve these common aches and pains by improving joint mobility, releasing soft tissue tensions and offering advice on effective stretching exercises to do at home.

If you are unsure whether Osteopathy can help you through your pregnancy please get in touch.

Climbing Injuries

Climbing Injuries

Headaches

95% of headaches suffered are of a musculoskeletal origin. These are often called tension headaches, which are commonly caused by slow alterations in posture over time that puts increasing stress on supporting muscles tendons and ligaments. Consequently, these headaches are treatable and relief can be found after a small number of osteopathic treatments.

Sports Injuries

Sports medicine focuses on:-

  • injury prevention
  • diagnosis of injury
  • treatment
  • rehabilitation
  • advice and self management

Sports medicine is not only for elite athletes; instead, it is for anyone who is unable to participate in their chosen sport.

Disc Injuries

Disc injuries are sometimes called slipped discs but this phrase is misleading. A disc is the supporting structure between the vertebrae and acts as a shock absorber for the spine. The disc does not slip; it bulges. The contents of the disc can rupture through the wall of the disc or the disc can even collapse. These changes to the disc can then compress the surrounding nerves and spinal cord causing pain in the local area as well as causing symptoms in the legs and arms.

Your osteopath will diagnose the level of damage to the disc then give advice on the best course of action. In most cases, osteopathy can reduce many of the presenting symptoms. In rare cases, patients may need to be referred to a neurologist or an orthopaedic surgeon.

If you are suffering from mild or acute back pain, please contact your local Osteopath for a correct diagnosis.
